TikTok takes over app downloads

With new apps being put on the market daily, it’s hard to predict what new game or service will set records and what will flop.

While it is fun for the average smartphone user to be in the know when it comes to new apps, it is essential for companies wanting to reach customers. Having a knowledge of what apps are popular allows brands to utilize new advancements to better target customers and relate to their audience.

In August of this year, the video platform TikTok had accumulated more than 130 million users. With these numbers, it surpassed YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook downloads in the US in the last month.

Though its download numbers are impressive, TikTok’s engagement rate is far below that of other popular apps. This engagement is measured and calculated by the portion of monthly users who open the app daily.

User engagement:

TikTok - 29%

Facebook - 96%

Instagram - 95%

Snapchat - 95%

Youtube - 95%

According to Apptopia, TikTok’s rising downloads might be a result of increased ad spending on Facebook and other platforms.

Facebook took note of TikTok’s sudden popularity and even tried to create their own similar video app called Lasso in hopes of gaining back their young teen audience.

As TikTok remains high on the charts, they have the opportunity to work with advertisers and partner with brands in order to make the most of their time at the top.
